Seems like he sees future events as inevitable, so why not get ahead of the curve? That was exactly how he described his involvement in Neuralink. He didn't think AI should be shaped by non-human thought alone as it gets smarter and smarter. He said he realized that it would get bored with us if we couldn't figure out how to communicate with it at a faster rate.

The interview he did with Babylon Bee was a very good exposition of his views. The part at the end where they probed him about his core beliefs was also very important to understanding him.

I was stunned during his Starship introduction where he indicated plans to land the boosters right back in the launch cradle. Again, it's a goal that is inevitable - of course they would want to do it, if possible. The audacity to try it is what's amazing.
