If you drill into such thinking, 911 Trutherism was no surprise. As with "birtherism" or Covid19 "cures" more recently.

Conspiracy preference of some people is always with us. Over my llifetime the trend went from extreme left (including paranormal causality beliefs like astrology) to the conventional thinking of the middle and extreme RW.

It starts with the conclusion and then the facts are spun to reinforce it. The Alex Jones's and Tucker Carlsons put it into the echo machine. Paranoid people listen and groupthink a narrative to fit their political and psychological bents. Or in the case of broadcasters, their fat wallets.

When presented with consensus logical high probability data, they will present their own "experts and facts." They are certain. They are zealots and as with religions, they have the correct God of Truth; and everyone else is a liar.

I still find it amazing how many were sucked into the 9/11 truther movement, that our own Govt brought down the twin towers
