There may be a lot of people like me who now question what we were taught in high school civics and college history survey classes in the 60s and 70s. Like what I was taught in Minnesota about the Sioux Uprising of 1862. Or how the American History texts just ended the Reconstruction period abruptly, then quickly jumped to the Spanish American War. No mention of all the murderous election violence across the South during the 1876 election or the corrupt compromise that retained Republican control of the White House in return for the withdrawal of Federal troops. Jim Crow was presented as more a matter of separate public drinking fountains, not the imposition of a form of local debtor law enforced serfdom on share croppers.

Long established black communities in small towns in my county were driven out of their homes by violent mobs around the turn of the century. They refugees fled to towns where they were tolerated. I grew up playing in an abandoned house on the edge of another town. No one told me why the home had been abandoned or that the exodus had occurred. My great grandparents lived in one of these parts of town. They lived in the n***** town on the edge of J*. My grandmother was born there. The family moved to the n***** town in T*. Later they moved to a farm a few miles away. Nobody explained the history behind these things to me as a child.
