Except Putin isn't a "genius", evil or otherwise. He isn't even clever. He is a moron. He could have used Russia's oil and other natural resource wealth to diversify and build the Russian economy. Instead, he used it to enrich himself and a few other families in Russia. And now, he will destroy the Russian and Ukrainian economy and he will also harm other economies around the world. He will win a few battles in the coming days and weeks but he won't win the war, any more than Hitler did. Yes, he "won" Crimea, but Crimea is basically nothing, a small piece of land that has a port, its only real significance. Unlike Ukraine, the second largest country in Europe in terms of land mass and one of the largest exporters of grain as well as some other important products.
This won't stand. It may take a few years but Ukraine will be independent again and relations with Russia will be soured for a long time. At least as long as Putin or Putin sympathizers are in charge of the country. I have read that many people in Russia don't like this move, with some public protests already happening despite the threat of being imprisoned. At some point, someone may even be driven to assassinate Putin. This move is as stupid as the US was for going into Vietnam or Iraq. Actually, even more stupid.
