The problem with nuclear weapons is that you can’t use them. Using them involves a Masada complex, a decision to go out in a blaze of glory… a decision to go - and to take your enemies with you. For the most part, no survivors. No one wins.

So, we’re back to conventional weapons - which are expensive and “labor intensive” - it takes many skilled, courageous and committed people to operate them. Ukraine, by itself, would not be a big threat to the Russians - but with most of the developed world wanting to kick their butt - and willing to put their money where their mouth is - it’s a different story.

Besides, Ukraine has several nuclear reactors and many very capable and trained people. If they decide to develop nukes, they can make it happen.

NATO — Their original mission was clear - to hold back communism, and Stalin in particular. Stalin died in 1953 - and the USSR in 1991. What are they now - no one seems to understand. A cutting edge of globalism? A career program for military officers? A living reminder that we’re not living in a utopia - and that dangers still exist? A polite way of keeping Europeans from killing each other again? Or, maybe, fighting global warming?

Whatever they are, a large military organization kept idle for decades may start aching for action.
