Interesting blog, thank you for posting.

I was wrong about the size of the invasion - it’s a lot larger than I thought. Objectively, it makes more sense - maybe they could protect the new “independent” republics - but what they need is to force Ukraine to the negotiation table. Whatever territorial concessions they all may agree on - will NOT involve any locations that aren’t predominantly (better, overwhelmingly) Russian. They wouldn’t want to get stuck with any insurgencies. Let the locals (and Ukraine's government) take care of that.

What is happening is tragic - but the 2014 coup (and consequently, Crimea joining Russia) fatally destabilized Ukraine. Too much bad blood between the 2 large ethnic blocks.
