My guess is that the better trained and armed Russians will win the first part of this war. They will be triumphant and will hang a banner that says in Russian "Mission Accomplished". They will hunt down the current leaders of Ukraine and will kill them, plausibly without a trial. But if they do give them a trial, it will be transparently a kangaroo court that may or may not be public. A real trial will just embarrass Putin and his gang.

But the Ukrainian people won't give up any more than the Iraqis gave up against the US or the Afghans gave up against Russia in the 80s or the US more recently. Russia will try to be ruthless but it will just make 40 million plus Ukrainians even more pissed off. They will eventually be kicked out of the country, either before or after Putin is kicked out of office. The Russian people will get sick of the guerilla war, as foreigners almost always do when they are occupying a country that doesn't want to be occupied.
