A Masada "complex": Is NOT "a decision to go out in a blaze of glory and to take your enemies with you."
You are right - Masada was an imperfect analogy. Masada, historically, is about choosing death over defeat and enslavement. However, a MAD “Masada” - when both sides are nuclear powers - are indeed “a decision to go out in a blaze of glory and to take your enemies with you”.

Sorry for not expanding on how I imagine future nuclear wars. In short, they would lead to Mutual Assured Destruction. MAD. End of the world.
people of little countries on the periphery of Russia and China are slowly arriving at the conclusion that they cannot rely on America, the UN, etc. for their independence but must possess nuclear weapons themselves

This implies uncontrolled nuclear proliferation. The great powers will be committing suicide if they allow this. It would lead to global MAD. Virtually guaranteed.

The horrifying thing about Kerry/Obama “Iran deal” is precisely that it’s a step in that direction.

How should smaller nations protect their independence? The best they can. Understand your place in the larger picture - and, first and foremost, don’t be stupid. The article by Lee Smith - posted earlier today by Tom Clarke - explains this at some length.
