You are inarguably right. My only defense is temporary insanity and when I sent my Letter to the Editor I eliminated the mention of Motown, realizing, albeit belatedly, that the genre are incomparable. I apologize to all who danced in the streets with the Vandellas and made out in the back seat of Daddy's Chevy to the sounds of the Temptations, the Supremes and the not-to-be forgotten Marvin Gaye. I was certainly one of you. But it's sad that they receive more respect than Beethoven. Shouldn't it go both ways? I remember being oh-13 or so when the Beatles appeared on Ed Sullvan. My father was unforgivably rude. The whole time they were singing I Wanna Hold Your Hand, he was making fun of their music, their hair, their cute little suits. That was bad enough. But then, on the same show, (at least this is my memory) was Cab Calloway-who did this weird thing-or so it sounded to me!-bah-de-boddy-boddy-bo, (audience echos) boggledy-iggledy-gobbledy gook- well you get the idea--and my father is saying--"Now that's REAL music!" I'm looking at him in total disbelief. He's got to be kidding. Anyway, spare me from turning into an elitist parent. Motown rulz. |
