After digging some more, I found this bit of history. Ukrainian nationalists fought alongside the Nazi's in WW2. Possibly why Stalin took drastic steps against Ukraine when they resisted the yoke of communism after the war ended. Probably a revenge motive, but just my guess. Hitler vs Stalin.
