Incidentally, I just discovered that the Dneiper starts in the Valdai Hills near Smolensk, Russia. I see that the Valdai Discussion Club took its name from Lake Valdai - located in the same hills. valdaiclub.com is a good source for learning about Russian strategic concerns.
