Russia's excuse "because of Ukraine becoming NATA" is ridiculous on its surface. There are quite a few NATO countries "on his doorstep". Fundamentally, he has no right to dictate other countries decision regarding who they will, or will not become partners with. It's just a red-herring for media coverage as to "why". Why is about power and wealth under the Kleptocracy of Russia.

Russia invaded the Crimea first, they wanted the ports - lots of money in shipping.
The world basically shrugged its shoulders.

Because of the tepid reaction to Crimea, they expected roughly the same.
Their goal was to install a puppet regime similar to Belarus. It may or may not work.

With a weak US President and weaker still European leaders, the timing felt right for Putin.

I think he misjudged the worlds reaction given that he was unable to prevent news escaping via social media and other venues.

He may still succeed, but the cost to the Russian economy will be great.

We need to drill! We need to open ANWAR. We need to approve offshore drilling permits. We need to build nuclear plants. We need to be an exporter of natural gas to Europe.

That should be are response. And we should go after it like a Manhattan project. That will more than anything create the environment whereby Russia is isolated economically. We should kick out their Cosmonauts from the U.S. space program and severe are ties with their space program. We should also kick out their students, Professors and anyone else from the U.S. and work to remove their VETO status at the U.N.

These steps will send the right message to China eyeing Taiwan.
