I can only speak for myself. The issue of nato expansion was on the table for 30 years, ever since the collapse of the USSR. It’s not a new issue. Why is Ukraine neutrality so critical from their point of view? I guess, because they’re not comfortable with having a 1,200 mile border with a “defense” block that they see as potential adversaries. They were given many promises over the years, but for the most part the western side just laughed them out of the room. They were treated like a shithole. So, they became pissed - and waited for an opportune moment, when the West is having a bad period - and decided, it’s now or never.

2 more points. The informations superhighway makes this situation particularly dangerous. The entire planet is almost completely united. People lose reason - and push, essentially, for a nuclear war. That’s crazy. In the past few thousand years that region knew hundreds of wars. It’s not like America. The problem is - if Western leadership is pushed to escalate, no one is likely to live another day to deal with these issues in the future.

Which is exactly the thing that worries me (I’m just an old retired guy, and ALL I can do about this is worry). I want this shit storm to pass. What’s happening over there is horrible. War is horrible. But, wars always happened, and likely always will. It’s just the stupid human nature. This is why we keep a powerful military - do discourage anyone from attacking us. Call me a coward if you must - but I do not want to see a nuclear war.
