I am predicting that in the coming week Russia will increase their level of brutality and increase the bombing of the cities. The issue for the Russians is that they have to achieve a quick victory. IF Kyiv can hold out for 2 or 3 months, then Russia might be forced to come to the table. They know this and now have to resort to desperate tactics even if they know them to be risky and likely to fail. They want to be in a position of negotiating from a position of strength because they know that right now they have little leverage. So they have to pick up pace. Sad and very sorry for the Ukrainians, but is how it will go.

I have actually seen wars (plural) up close and personal. It is such an ugly and stupid thing. Although I am not a strict pacifist, long ago I decided that I would never support any war short of a self defense against a direct attack. You will find many who have actually seen wars agree with me.

Wars take a momentum of their own and make unpredictable turns. The media fans passions and amplifies them. And before you know it, you find that you have painted yourself in a corner and cannot get out of a predictable situation that nobody wants to be in. The problem is this: The best chance for Ukraine to "win" is a protracted war of attrition. The longer the war goes on and more casualties each side takes, the less likely that it can end. So ironically, the casualties work out in Ukraine's favor. BUT, the best chance for peace is a quick settlement. This is the conundrum and the paradox of war.

Putin is an idiot and an asshole for bringing this to both nations. He will be known as the Russian "Saddam" and will probably end the same way - dragged on the streets as people celebrate his demise.
