In the eastern United States there really are huge areas of regrown natural forest, plus native trees that have been allowed to come up in the suburbs. It's enormous. My own yard, not very large but Ok for mid-city, maybe a quarter acre, was almost nothing but lawn when we moved in 20 years ago. I have planted but also allowed what wanted to grow to grow and it is now a veritable forest--mostly hardwoods, especially the wonderful willow-oak. Lots of other people have done this. In summer much of our city is invisible from the air because of the trees.

This is a good thing.
