Some of those poor people in Donetsk interviewed by Patrick Lancaster were saying that the Ukrainians using military equipment to shell them were basically just criminals and bandits who wanted to clear the people out so they could get claims on the ground for coal. I doubt the guys doing the shelling would be able to follow through on the coal. They were just tools, paid off by some oligarch and paid by their own theft of abandoned houses. Sickening to see Lindsey Graham and John McCain and our State Department hanging out with and cheerleading that crew.

As time goes by, I look at the Alaska Permanent Fund as a great example of how to share a regional resource wealth. I hope it is never raided by the legislature or circumstances (like WWIII) and continues to provide dividends.
