Economic sanctions by definition cause economic dislocations in a global economy. With all respect to Pres Trump, those import taxes on Chinese goods didn’t come out of the pocket of Chinese companies - we paid them. Iran is an extremely unpalatable player - but when Obama unfroze their assets, we didn’t “pay them billions” - we simply allowed them to take their own money out. He paid them something on top, but that’s a different matter.

It’s imprudent to use them so much. It will inevitably backfire.
