Hi Worswick,

You are one of the few people on this thread who has some understanding and direct experience with India. I appreciate your voicing the concerns about BJP. A lot of westerners and some indians have similar concerns. I grew up in India and spent several years of early adulthood in Germany, speak German and claim a better understanding of German history than most. I think comparing India with Weimar Republic in Germany is absurd. I would say with all due respect you have no idea how India functions politically. BJP is a party of small shop keepers and opportunists. It does have its roots in RSS which some people consider a fascist organization but that's not the majority of BJP. If you want to fault BJP for being too nationalistic and thinking of India first. I will accept that, and I do not see any thing wrong with it. Politics in India is about opportunism, corruption getting rich at public expense. Lobbying in India is not as open as here, but well connected vested interests prevail there just like here. India has very strong democratic traditions and free press nothing big happens quietly or without a debate. If any thing their is too much debate and nothing worth while gets done quickly. Fear of Indian nationalism and Hinduvata is grossly exaggerated.

I am not worried about BJP, if they make India function better more power to them. If they try some thing totally out of the main stream they will be out of power. Unfortunate Anti Muslim deeds BJP indulged in past had a lot to do with an extreme right wing. Just like here you can not defend anti abortion rightist bombing and killing people. These fringe groups do not define the main stream republican party. Good politicians govern from center and BJP would be no different.

There is no current or future danger of India becoming a dictatorship. I think every one should relax and hope that India finally gets a strong Government, which can improve the lot of average Indian.

Best wishes,

Jyoti
