It is hard for an American who has not lived in non-western cultures to get that. I am going to run through a couple of examples for you.

When it is layoff time in America, who is let go first? I have first hand knowledge of people who were near retirement and were picked first just so that the company would reduce its bill for their pension. As a business, that makes perfect sense. But as a member of the society and an American, how to feel about that?

In contrast, when you live in the south America or ME or actually most places in Asia, all things being equal, the person who has the most dependents or is the oldest is the one that is let go last. The young people are the first to get the axe because they can cope with the loss better than someone with kids and mortgage.

When it is holiday time (forgetting about the recent Covid period), why do the TV programs suck? They suck because the network figures there are fewer viewers at home watching, so they save their best programs for their prime time. But over there TV puts out their best programs. Why? Because it is the holidays and anyone unfortunate enough to not be able to go out and have fun deserves to have special time too.

I was a guest of a Venezuelan friend in his homeland (he is now the chief strategy officer at an NYC firm). We went to a pharmacy to buy something. It was locked behind a window and we had to call someone to get it who went to someone else to get the key and then we of course went to a 3rd person to pay (and there may have even been a 4th person involved - I can't remember). He complained to his father about the stupidity of this system and how much easier it would have been if he could just grab it and pay. His father chided him for having spent too much time in America and have become too American. He asked, if we did it your way, then how would those other poor souls make a living? They'd have to be on the street stealing, he said.

Having this level of social conscientiousness does not come easily to Americans because for generations America has cultivated a "business first" mindset along with a "kill or be killed" business mindset. In fact when you read business books, a huge chunk of them describe business in military terms.

But not every culture views life as war. Life is more peaceful in many other parts of the world. In fact, a very big chunk of the businesses outside of the US do not see making money as their prime objective.

PS If you have not watched The Avatar, I recommend that you do. I hear the sequel is coming up soon. The movie does provide a contrast between a harmonious life and an American centric view of their society.
