Some 500 years ago, a wise Italian pointed out that the #2 and #3 should always gang up against the #1 because once one of them is gone, the other will be very much under the thumb of the first. So on the face of it, China should support Russia.

But there are some complications for China here. The US is not directly at war with Russia and won't be weakened by a prolonged war. It is therefore better to be on the side of the winner and bid your time until a better opportunity comes along. But not without getting some concessions. I wonder what concessions the US is willing to give and what the Chinese will ask for.

Putin overplayed his hand. But perhaps he felt he had to move. Perhaps in a decade or two we'll find out why he chose to act now.
