As I’ve said many times, if Putin dies today, the next president of Russia would be doing the same things. Takes an effort to understand it, but Russians really do take the Ukraine - NATO situation as an existential issue.

There is nothing similar in our neighborhood. For the heck of it, imagine that Venezuela goes nuclear — and unites all nations to our south against us. We would have an enormous problem if Mexico would wish to join that alliance.
Earlier today I kind of blundered into a way to take a glimpse at the situation from the point of view of Russians. You don’t have to agree, of course.

If the dictum about knowing thy opposition/enemy is true - and it is - it’s worth a try.

We are, suddenly, back to the worst days of the Cold War. It’s a pretty lousy feeling.
