There is a big difference, Putin is not "afraid" of NATO being next door. Putin is pissed that having NATO next door limits his plans for expansion and re-constitution of the former Soviet Union.

He knows by looking at Estonia and Lithuania, as those countries become NATO members and aligned with the west, wealth increases, poverty decreases and therefore the opportunity to turn the ideology back toward state controlled dictatorship is far less likely to occur.

In other words, when the nations become strongly democratic and largely free from corruption, the foundation is strong enough to resist Russian meddling to install a puppet government.

Putin hates that, as do others in high ranking positions of their Kleptocratic society. They see the western influence growing and have taken this opportunity with a weak and vacillating President to make the move to stop it.

So the "existential threat" to Putin is western values of Democracy, free markets and free speech growing around them.
