Saw this in Semiconductor Business News

Personally, I don't believe this story's projections. But the fact that it is being reported is very important, because it will definitely affect the market's perception of ADSL.

xDSL Chip Sales To Hit $700 Million

By SBN Staff, Semiconductor Business News

The worldwide market for the xDSL chip set is
expected to increase with triple-digit growth rates in
the next couple of years, reaching 22 million units and
almost $700 million in revenues, according to In-Stat
Thursday.

The Scottsdale, Ariz., market research company said
both symmetrical and asymmetrical DSL chip sets
will show strong growth through 2002, but ADSL,
ADSL-Lite, and VDSL formats are most likely to
generate the bulk of the revenues for semiconductor
companies participating in the fast-emerging business.

"The ability to utilize existing copper wire to deliver
high-speed access many times the rates available from
analog modems makes DSL technology an immediate
win for service providers, equipment and silicon
manufacturers, and especially end users," said
Shannon Pleasant, analyst for In-Stat's
Communications Semiconductor End-Use Service.
"The push for standardized ADSL-Lite and the
competitive pressures exerted on RBOCs from
cable companies will speed ADSL-Lite deployment in
particular, which is expected to begin this year,
reaching mass deployment in 1999."
