The improvements in solid state optical sensors and demand for them really exploded with the advent of the smartphone.

It's just an amazing engineering accomplishment the last fifteen years or so.

And they are cheap!

I never would have guessed the massive price drop for them even just a few years ago.

LIDAR has a place and my eventually take some ground as they get cheaper to manufacture, consume less power and get physically smaller.
