NAH - Re: "How is he (Murphy) viewed in the Bay Area?"

Among the stock broker/investment community he is well respected. Among the technical companies he "analyses", I don't know.

I was invited to hear him speak at a luncheon about 2 1/2 years ago in Palo Alto. Murphy is quite an excellent speaker with a very good acceptance of the role of technology in America's (and the world's) future. Accordingly, he leans toward being bullish.

He also has become heavily involved in the Valley's BioTech industry, again from an analysis and investment standpoint.

From reading his newsletters, I am forced to conclude that he has spread himself too thin - he knows a little about a lot of companies but not a whole lot about any of them. When it comes to marginal companies he doesn't seem to be able to distinguish real value from marginal players. When the market turns real BULLISH, he tends to love all tech companies.

I never paid attention to BioTech companies and frankly I gained a great respect for many of these after listening to Murphy. I invested in two of these companies - and I had a ride that made Intel look like it was on ProZac!

Many of the BioTechs hold great promise with millions and millions invested in but one or two drugs. The likelihood of them hitting it big is very, very small. These stocks are NOT for the faint of heart. Luckily, I made money on my investments in them - and that includes going long AND short.
