If you have the money, TradeStation by Omega Research is a great program to use to test ideas. You must supply the data, but programming system ideas is very flexible and easy as well, once you learn the language. If you have ANY programming experience, the language will be very easy to master. Also, it can chart and follow your systems real-time, but if you are not interested in that, the non-real-time version is cheaper. They will probably come out with version 5.0 sometime this year, which will be 32-bit and deal with portfolios better, so it may be worth waiting around for. The current version 4.0 is very capable and fast, though. Many people also use MetaStock, a similar program, but I haven't personally used it. For serious testing, I believe TradeStation is the best program to use.
