The entire "Ukraine caused this because of wanting to join NATO" train of thought, would have some credibility if Russia stated they were willing to go to war to stop Ukraine from joining NATO.
The Russians have been saying this for many, many years. If you research the events, you’ll find it. Not in those exact words, but they've been saying it. Their ultimatums that they presented already having surrounded Ukraine hardly left any doubt about them being serious. And still, those ultimatums were taken… not seriously.

War is very ugly. So, I hope they work out a deal, rather than risk spreading it globally.

The thing is - what *I* think makes zero difference. What anyone else thinks - including NATO, or our president - that is still not decisive, as the events are proving. If a nuclear superpower sees the potential Ukraine nato membership as a threat to their very survival - that’s decisive. Know thy enemy. From their POV it makes no sense to compromise on their demands. If they did - the peace would not last, there would be war anyway. That’s what makes it so dangerous.
