This takes place in and around El Paso. Have you seen it? From the comments:

...McCarthy lived here from 1977 until 1999 and he roamed the downtown area as well as the surrounding desert into places that were hells antiroom. To this day people arrive in this city thinking that they can make easy money doing something related to the trade. Don't like the movie? Fine...,.but heed the message.
