It can never work - it totally ignores the long standing Shia vs Sunny tensions.

At some point - don’t recall exactly, maybe based on the report from the “Iraq study group” — the idea was born that Iran could serve as the main regional power in the ME. Over time, the idea won over everyone who is anyone in our FP establishment… then, it was, apparently, the usual mechanical “follow the leader”.

Some years ago I used to talk with a very bright young Doc from Syria. He had no doubts that several Sunni countries would go nuclear if Iran moves forward with those ambitions.

It’s just simply clear. There would be a nuclear arms race. Or, one side would use its advantage of being the first one to get them.
