Semitool recently laid off about 70 people.

The bottom closing price for AMAT was a split-adjusted 11 1/4 on July 24, 1996. I just looked at the 11/21/96 earnings announcement, and there was no layoff announcement, but there was a restructuring charge of $25.1 million in connection with a previously announced layoff which occurred during the quarter. Their bookings were down 27% from the previous quarter. They did say, however, that "We are cautiously optimistic that memory device prices and inventory levels are stabilizing in our customers' business". That's when the semi equip bull market really started in earnest.
