IC720, the whole premise over letting Russia "win" is the notion that Putin's war in Ukraine is limited to just that, and that Putin has no grand plans to go any further.

That premise is complete, 100% denial. There was a time that I once believed that, but not anymore, especially as Putin goes all-in with tens of thousands of deaths on his hands, all thanks to his ego.

Even the whole assumption that Putin wouldn't mount a full-scale invasion of Ukraine, that he would simply limit himself to the eastern territories, turned out to be mistaken.

And yes, economic sanctions often hurt the people more than the leaders, but what else are we supposed to do? The last time we gave up on sanctions and tried to free a people from a madman, it cost over 4,000 American military lives and tens of thousands of Iraqis dead.

But continuing to trade with a madman, who has clearly crossed a line, is also not an option, so sanctions would have to do.

In fact, I would go even further and establish a complete trade embargo.

And yes, that would mean upsetting China, who would no doubt defy the embargo. But it's also time we started coming to terms with our economic codependency on China. If that means short-term pain for long-term security, so be it.
