The monthly Infrastructure had a big section on "the cost of ownership" and how choosing a fab location can be very important as are the issues of timing. In the end, there have been some big losses for missteps.

As I was reading this article, I was thinking why don't they just say who is winning and loosing? Instead, they just make suggestions that Korea has not handled fab development as well as some. They also suggest Micron blew off huge profits by being so slow with their Utah site. The lost profits from these missteps will damage the ability to bring timely new capacity online.

They talked about the issue of refitting existing fabs vs building new. A fab has a life time and at some point it's useless to refit. Since we've seen some delays and refits this last year, at what point will the delay of new fabs become impossible?

They also point out a trend to bringing a fab online in record time. Soon a fab will go from ground breaking to completition in 12 months. Will chip makers get complacent and try to wait to the last minute only to see equipment backlogs drive out deliveries?

How easily can a 16M DRAM fab be refitted to handle 64 and 256M?

In the end, the article doesn't really say much at all, but it nearly does. I find this isn't unusual for Infrastructure. Does anyone have a suggestion for a better newsletter?

Regards,

Mark
