I fully understand your post.. same with me growing up in Chicago. My neighborhood was not far from
Chicago's infamous "Sanitary & Ship Canal". Way back when the Chicago River was 'reversed'.. instead
of emptying into Lake Michigan, the flowage was diverted via that canal to the DesPlains River some 25 miles
or so distance away.
So, instead of draining to the Atlantic Ocean via the Great Lakes, it ended up flowing into the Mississippi River..
turds & whatnot floating past New Orleans.

I'm thinking Chicago was sensitive to our Canadian neighbors to the north.

But the thing is China f****d itself with industrialization. How can they cleanup that buildup of industrial waste
from their percolated surface waters, made even worst with the overuse of their shrinking aquafers?
