I've always been interested in identification, I've never tried to eat wild mushrooms... too little margin for error for my tastes. Lets see,
Amanita Muscaria, that's a name that pops into my head, reddish orange cap, flecks of tissue on the surface... deadly. I used to see these things in the forest/woods all the time. We also have these non descript little white mushrooms known by the common name as "deathcaps". It might not be so bad if they just killed you, but the toxins tend to target organs instead. The only way to learn for sure is to try a small piece of what you believe to be an edible mushroom to see if it causes ill effects. I always wondered if some of those toxins might not accumulate and give one long term problems.

I always believed that crunchy granola guy who used to advertise grape-nuts may very well have died from long term effects of his wild food diet...

Yes that's the right book...
