He couldn't commit a large force to do away with the Ukies in fast order because he has NATO forces near his border and he has to be ready for them if they attack.

Wouldn't that support the widely held theory that PooTin wanted the war in Ukraine over in three days, so that he could then fortify his forces against an eeeee-vil NATO counterattack?
