Ukraine should study the relationship between USSR and Finland. At the end of WWII, Stalin grabbed the SE corner of Finland and made it clear that strict neutrality was required. The Finns didn't completely control their foreign policy, but were left alone and prospered. They are in EU but not (for now) in NATO. They have a 800+ mi border with Russia.
