I got a chuckle over a post from one of the people you interact with here. He said Putin stated 'Russia does not steal'.

I was that poster, John. You remember me from our previous exchanges over the years, don’t you?.. Putin actually said “we do not believe in stealing” - but that’s too subtle, I guess.

I have no idea how International Law treats the subject of sanctions. Can a small, poor country apply sanctions against a superpower? Or, is it that only the rich and the mighty can police and punish all others?

Personally, when President Obama released previously frozen Iranian assets, I never agreed that he “paid Iranians” a certain number of billions. He simply allowed them access to their own money. He paid them some on top, but that’s another story.
Extreme sanctions are reminiscent of the times when an army would lay siege over a city - planning to starve them to the point when they submit.

That’s pretty much what the West is trying to do now. How will Russia react if those sanctions really “work”? Will they take it in silence - or will they lash out, threatening to start a war?

We have no idea. But, you can see that this is a very legit subject for discussion on the “politics for pros” board.

Personally, I’d rather not find out what their reaction would be. Looks like they’re working on several ways to make do.
