Bay Networks Selects IDT CPU For Industry's First MCNS DOCSIS Two-Way Cable Access Products
SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 9, 1998--Integrated Device Technology, Inc. (IDT), the broadest designer and manufacturer of MIPS(R) RISC microprocessors, today announced that the company's R3041(TM) microprocessor, one of the most cost-effective 32-bit microprocessors in the industry, has been selected as the processor engine powering the Bay Networks Broadband Technology Division's Generation 4 family of cable modems.
The Bay Networks Broadband Technology Division is a leader in providing the industry's first cable modems that adhere to the new MCNS (Multimedia Cable Network Systems) DOCSIS (Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification). IDT's broad microprocessor family has been an integral part of the two companies' long-standing relationship in providing leading-edge communications devices.
''One of the key reasons we've worked with IDT for so many years is the upgradeability its broad, software- and pin-compatible microprocessor line offers us, improving our time to market,'' said Byron Gayman, director of engineering for Bay Networks' Broadband Technology Division. ''IDT has also provided us with excellent service and support at a competitive price.''
''With the industry's first MCNS/DOCSIS-based product, Bay Networks will lead the way in bringing digital bandwidth to the home and small office/home office environments,'' said Nick Kucharewski, vice president of IDT's microprocessor division. ''IDT is pleased to be the premier supplier of microprocessors for Bay Networks' ground-breaking cable modems. We look forward to providing both Bay Networks and the market at large with processors optimized for future-generation cable modems.''
The Bay Networks Broadband Technology Division's Generation 4 cable modem enables the existing cable plant, previously used to distribute analog video, to provide digital bandwidth to the home. The increased digital bandwidth is essential for multiple current and future applications such as web browsing, data transfer, and both audio and video streaming for PCs.
IDT's World-Class RISC Microprocessor Family
The IDT R3041 is a 32-bit microprocessor that combines the high performance of the popular MIPS RISC R3000(R) CPU with optimized on-chip caches and a programmable bus interface for reduced system cost. Superior price/performance, software- and pin-compatibility, small form factor and the availability of extensive development tools have made the IDT RISC microprocessor family the standard for a number of industry-leading data and telecommunications systems, internetworking, multimedia and consumer products, such as WebTV(R) Plus Internet receivers and EchoStar digital broadcast satellite receivers. IDT's RISC product offering delivers a wide range of price and performance choices, including 32-bit microprocessors and a family of 64-bit microprocessors.
Packaging, Pricing and Availability
The R3041 is available in 16, 20, 25 and 33 MHz frequencies, in 100-pin thin quad flat packages (TQFP) and 84-pin plastic-leaded chip carrier (PLCC) packages. Prices start at $6.10 in 10,000-piece quantities. The R3041 is also available in a 3.3-volt version, the RV3041.
