Italians surrendered by the acre in WWII in north Africa. My father described how one soldier could take 1000 Italians prisoner. And the Italians would carry the gun for the captor. Not so with Germans, who would need careful management and lots of guards, as the Germans were wanting to fight and would do. My uncle Jim Kirk was taken prisoner in the desert in north Africa. They were treated reasonably in prisoner of war camps. His and my mother's cousin Harper Bongard was murdered in a Japanese prisoner of war camp in Japan. Jim hated the Japanese for their cruelty. But another cousin Jim Bongard married one [he was in the occupation force after the war, as was my other uncle Bill [Ernest] Bongard Kirk]. In a couple of months our Japanese exchange student from the early 1990s will bring his daughter Shuri to New Zealand to live and attend school. I'm looking forwards to that. She's good fun. At some stage, people should get over Stalin and Lenin and mass murder. Same for slavery in USA = reparations are an absurd idea for descendants of slaves. Stop whining about past decades and centuries before you were born. Get on with creating a better future. Nobody today owned slaves. Nobody alive was a slave. [In USA anyway]. Poor white people whose families never owned slaves should not be paying taxes to rich black people like Obama who is only partly African and whose father was Kenyan and never a slave.
