I have a very liberal friend I like very much. He is extremely gregarious, will talk to anyone.

A couple of years ago, we were having drinks in the French Quarter when a group of young Hispanic ladies came in. He decided to talk to them, thinking that he’d charm them. They turned out to be nurses from South Texas attending a convention.

My friend decided that he’d use his liberal politics as a talking point. Big mistake. They turned on him. The leader, a short little firecracker from McAllen, got into his face, sticking her finger in the bottom of his chest, telling him that “you think we’re liberals just because we’re women and we’re Hispanic. Well, you’re wrong!!” She then went into a rant about all the failed liberal policies, etc.

My friend didn’t have a chance.

It was a beautiful thing. I still remind him of the incident when he starts political talk.

I’m not at all surprised that Hispanic women are increasingly conservative. In my view, this is a function of family values, which run very deep in intact Hispanic families. Liberal policies are anathema to these values, so these women rebel and fight. The article gets it.

I would point out that this political dynamic might not work too well in the mega cities like Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, etc. as the values these Hispanic women carry get diluted in these atomized places, where a sense of community doesn’t really exist.
