If he didn't move when he did, Ukraine was poised to overrun the breakaway Republics and they would have slaughtered the people there. The Western media does not talk about it, but that is why he built up his forces on Ukraine's border to begin with. Ukraine was preparing to eliminate the "Russian speaking population problem" once and for all. Some analysts believe they were planning to move on March the 15th or thereabouts. Putin just beat them to the punch.

If the Ukies would have honored their agreement in the Minsk Accords, none of this would have happened. When asked why they would not, they said they had decided they didn't like those agreements anymore.
