I disagree with your take on Samsung, but we've had that discussion in the past and I don't want to redo it here. I also disagree with your analogy of Micron to Dell or, even worse, Gateway. China has thrown hundreds of billions of dollars at trying to duplicate DRAM and they have nothing to show for it but losses and lawsuits that accuse them of theft (and, in fact, Taiwan authorities have apprehended and tried several ex-employees of Micron for stealing from them). There are much bigger barriers to entry in DRAM than there are building computers, although obviously mindshare would take a long time to penetrate.

However, you are right about capex, but that is one of their assets as well as an albatross. One day perhaps they'll divide the company in two but I doubt it. Ever since sub 40x, it has become increasingly difficult to make transitions in DRAM. They are one of three companies that have been able to make them in a timely way. With demand continuing to grow at a steady mid-teen percent per year, the world of tech needs for these three companies to continue to grow at a steady pace. Eventually, Mr. Market will get it.
