go to youtube and watch a few of the videos of Patrick Lancaster. He is an American journalist (formerly US Navy) who has been covering Ukraine for about 8 years. One of the features of his videos is to interview the civilians. After you see a few, you won't think it is absurd anymore. He gets right in the middle of it. He must be an adrenaline junkie because he is often near the fire. He takes a lot of chances
