It is because of the geography of the European continent. . NATO wants it for the same reason Hitler wanted it. If you are going to defeat Russia, controlling Ukraine is a must. It makes it very difficult for Russia to defend itself if NATO has Ukraine.

And let's not be naïve. That is the goal. It has been the goal of the West for centuries to control Russia..
