SMU got the death penalty when if under today's NIL rules they would have been fine. People cheated, players got paid. Just under the table.

Some schools got caught, others didn't. All major schools cheated the rules. Maybe they had connections, maybe they just hid it better. Today Herschel Walker is running for public office. No one will ever convince me him or his family didn't receive illegal benefits to attend Georgia. Someone should ask him about the Trans Am. Georgia always got away with it. Or change the rules that didn't suit them.

Once there was a LB/DE type player in Georgia that was one of the top ranked in the country. Sunday night before signing day a Clemson coach took him to a hotel and told no one where they were. Wed morn he appeared and signed with Clemson. Georgia HC VD went crazy. The next year there was a rule that a coach couldn't have face to face contact with a player from Sun till Wed of signing day week. We call it the Clemson rule. Turns out that player had some big plays in a couple of wins against Ga.

It was a different world back then.
