General Norman Schwarzkopf Jr. explained in response to criticism of bulldozing dirt onto Iraqi soldiers in trenches that there's no nice way to kill opposing soldiers.
I don't see why any particular mechanism of homicide in war is considered better than others. Bomb, bullet, poison, suffocation, drowning, knife, club, sword, radioactive atoms, germ, nuke, napalm, phosphorus, throwing out of buildings or aircraft, are all horrible when used in conflict.
In a well managed euthanasia some would be much preferable of course, such as a nice anaesthetic in a comfy bed.
Virtuous Victorian Values do not include Malthusian murder and conquest.
The fact that evil was done contemporaneously with Virtuous Victorian activities does not mean the goodness didn't exist.
Similarly Virtuous Victorian Values exist in some people in the USA even while the greatest evil ever is planned and ready to launch 10 megatons at a time and murder.
Unfortunately, the evil-doers are ascendant in USA. They want war so the Ukrainians are getting it, good and hard, coming ready or not.
