The growing demand for fertilizers and the need for Brazil to become less dependent on imports of the product have made companies take advantage of the moment to invest and make alternatives available to rural producers. One of these companies is Verde Agritech , in the field of agricultural technology, which produces potassium fertilizer .

With two factories installed in Minas Gerais, the second of which should start operating at the beginning of the second semester, the company is already studying the implementation of a third unit for 2024 . Several states dispute the third unit, which, depending on the stimuli, may also be in Minas.

Since the company was founded in 2005, around R$ 500 million have already been invested in operations in Minas Gerais. In the second unit alone, the investment is estimated at R$ 80 million. Today, the company has 300 employees and will hire another 60 for the second operation.

According to the founder of Verde Agritech, Cristiano Veloso, adding the capacity of the three units, the company will have enough potash production to supply 16.4% of national demand from 2024.

“We are doing studies and choosing locations. Some other states of the federation, in addition to Minas Gerais, are interested in taking the factory and we are evaluating where it will be. Of course, as a good miner, we want him to stay in Minas and we believe he has everything to stay. But, due to the fertilizer crisis, other states are very committed to being able to take the factory”, he highlights.

Also according to Veloso, the state where the plant is built will be able to be 100% independent of imported potassium. “Therefore, there is great interest from different agricultural states in relation to the new unit. The government of Minas has made an effort to get the third plant here ,” he said.

Verde Agritech has two manufacturing units in Minas Gerais, located in São Gotardo. The first unit has a production capacity of 600 thousand tons of fertilizer per year. The second unit, which should be inaugurated at the beginning of the second half, has a capacity of 2.4 million tons. The forecast is that the third unit, still in the study phase, will produce up to 10 million tons. Together, they will produce 16.4% of Brazilian demand for potash.

In 2021, the company produced 400,133 tons of potassium-based products, reaching a turnover of R$ 119.3 million, 239% higher than in 2020. For this year, the expectation is to increase revenues by 100% and reach production minimum of 700 thousand tons.

“These numbers were announced at the beginning of the year, but the estimate with the fertilizer crisis is for higher numbers,” said Veloso.

sustainable fertilizerThe potash produced by Verde Agritech , according to Veloso, is sustainable . The company does not use chemicals in the manufacture of fertilizers, which are chlorine-free, helping to preserve important microorganisms for soil quality, unlike imported potassium chloride. The product is also approved for organic farming.

“Another advantage is that, in addition to potassium, our fertilizer has sulfur, boron, silicon, magnesium, manganese, and several other important nutrients for agricultural production. They also favor the soil microbiota. The product is also cheaper than imported potassium chloride , with a cost of around 10% less”, he says.

According to Verde Agritech, more than 2,000 Brazilian farmers use the company's products , which have already been applied to more than 500,000 hectares since 2018. Worldwide, 5,000 farmers use Verde Agritech products to produce more nutritious and sustainable food.
