I mostly agree but believe that the West needs to take a deep breath and assess Russian military capabilities in light of its recent experience in Ukraine. We also need to assess how much of these capabilities will remain intact in the future as the conflict becomes a lower grade, chronic fight.

It is likely that Russia’s military is degraded, weakened, and that it will become even more so as the Ukrainian conflict drags on. It seems that Russia should have very little in the way of resources to make a credible play for the small Baltic states or to take any future conflict outside its borders. Even if that is its intention, which I doubt.

But it has First World nuclear weapons, which is why we need to tread very, very carefully. Russia may well become more dangerous as its conventional weaponry is degraded. So, the amount of pressure put on it needs to be very well calculated.

Any direct American intervention not based on NATO obligations would be insane. My fear is that we have a cadre of ‘experts’ in DC whose judgment cannot be trusted. They stirred the Ukrainian pot mightily after 2014. Their record for engaging in futile wars is unmatched. This time, nukes might well be in play.

And our President is demented. He will shortly be preoccupied by corruption matters caused by his son’s lost laptop. His replacement, should replacement become necessary, is a complete idiot.

Oh, and let’s not forget the Chinese.

In other words, we are living in an even more dangerous world than usual.
