Ed Luttwak is struggling with a solution. The one he’s proposing is a stick and carrot deal. It could work - but only if all sides are ready - Ukraine, Russia, Nato, the U.S. But, none of them are: the West still wants to beat Russia into submission (as per Zbig Brzezinski). Europe, deep down, is bored - and is hoping for something. Rejuvenation? Reanimation maybe? Ukraine still hopes to win - even if it takes an expansion of the war beyond its borders. And the Russians want to strengthen and protect their Western flank - even as they turn away from Europe and re-orient themselves towards Asia. Some now say that Putin must be punished as Milosevic was. But P controls nuclear weapons, and the explosion of just one would break the spell of non-use, opening the gates of hell.
