I was an engineer with a successful career in all things computer and electronics, and yet I cannot do arithmetic. Arithmetic is just something memorized. When I got my first calculator in the 1970s it was a game changer, I could setup my formulas fine, but to come up with the final answer I was counting on my fingers or chanting through various rhyming schticks to come up with the actual final answer. It was slow. The calculator brought my counting up closer to my thinking.
